The Solution for Carbon Finance Initiatives
Transcript
There’s still a critical lack of investment in effectively applying social safeguards, which leaves Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities vulnerable and undermines the carbon market. So what’s the solution to this? Enhancing the enabling environment for rights-based governance of forest carbon initiatives. Strengthening the capacity of skills and voices of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. Supporting the full and effective participation of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in forest carbon finance initiatives and to integrate social safeguard requirements and processes in the design and implementation of these forest carbon initiatives.Â
So the Kawari Fund, which was launched earlier this year and has just launched its first call for proposals earlier this week was created to address this participation gap. And its aim is to promote and secure the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities in jurisdictional forest carbon finance initiatives.
It is crucial to address the significant lack of investment in social safeguards to protect Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. This lack of investment leaves them vulnerable and undermines the effectiveness of the carbon market. The solution is to create an enabling environment that promotes rights-based governance of forest carbon initiatives. This includes strengthening the capacity of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, promoting their voices, and supporting their effective participation in forest carbon finance initiatives.
The Kawari Fund aims to bridge this participation gap by promoting and securing the rights and interests of these communities in jurisdictional forest carbon finance initiatives.
How to transform the system?
Those most affected by the climate crisis are also those with the least power to decide and act on it. Tackling climate justice demands a shift in power, not only to repair frontline communities, but also to make sure that those who negotiate, sign and approve are also those most knowledgeable of what needs to be done to stop the crisis.
